Contemporary art is a complex system of knowledge that persistently raises new and distinct questions about (dis)identification. There are many ways to explore and acknowledge our subjectivity in time and space. Cartography, as an instrument of topography, can help us locate ourselves through a visual language.

The attempt to construct a mental map provides an opportunity to engage with a “mental image” and to represent such images within a network of relationships. The mental image is a relatively autonomous subset within the subject. When the affective-emotional level is included, the experience enriches these images until they become symbols.

Symbols are also images of memory that emerge from an intense exchange between the subject and a situation. From this universe of symbols, inventions can arise and new images can be created. In this way, a system can be built that is capable of integrating further images within itself.

At its core, the workshop focuses on root graphs or tree structures and on the unfolding of ideas expressed through words, drawings, images, music, gestures, objects, and more.

During the workshop, we will work individually and collectively to develop a cartographic language. A mental and critical map can help situate ourselves within a vital and healthy lived experience.

The shapes of the mind and fragments of memory naturally find a way to harmonize. In this space, past and present intertwine, recent and distant memories weave together freely. Within this blend, the self begins to pick up subtle signals about its own identity. Each shape holds countless memories and emotions, connecting them into a unified whole. The various elements, whether they feel abundant or sparse, seamlessly come together, creating an image that reflects the self—a single identity shaped by many experiences.

As you follow the gentle lines of colored pencils, you might notice a small, unsettling detail that adds complexity to the picture. It’s this blend of harmony and discomfort that makes the image captivating. The life of a woman, the life of an Asian woman, and questions about how prepared we are for the challenges of an aging society—these larger themes, intertwined with smaller ones like love and experiences at work, come together to shape who I am. The balance each person seeks is uniquely their own.
